With Autumn upon us, it's time to switch your wardrobe from linens and cottons to cosy knitwear and layers.
This season, men's fashion is seeing a huge shift towards timeless, vintage pieces for a refined and contemporary look. Think more muted tones, relaxed silhouettes and a return to the classic 'granddad style'.
The catwalks have been dominated by a revival of vintage wear, with timeless classics at the core. There's a growing trend of back to basics, with core, staple pieces that will age well in your wardrobe and last for years to come, stemming from a huge focus on sustainability.
Here at McElhinneys, our men's department has been getting an influx of Autumn/Winter deliveries from core brands like Barbour, Gant & more.
We're going to take a look through some of the season's trending styles to get you kitted out for the cooler weather.
1. Powerful Plaids
Plaid shirts have been an essential for years, but this year we're seeing it return with a twist.
The heritage-inspired print has been styled on the runways with a refined edge, using it to add texture and colour under layers. We've also been seeing it styled with sweatpants for an off-duty look.
A shirt we've been loving for its bold colour and ease of styling is this Gant Oxford shirt. It offers a more modern approach to a core classic with endless styling options.
2. Elegant Comfort
We're prioritising comfort like never before when it comes to fashion.
A trend we're seeing is understated, relaxed quarter-zips that have comfort at the core but still give a refined and classy look.
They're a popular alternative to the crewneck because they give a more polished look and can be styled as both casual wear and semi-formal wear.
A piece at the heart of this trend is this Ralph Lauren Quarter-zip jumper. This style of jumper is perfect for layering and adding a touch of luxury to your look without compromising comfort.
3. Timeless Denim
The resurgence of 90's fashion has brought the straight leg back as an alternative to the more extreme baggy jeans we've been seeing over the last few years.
Straight leg jeans offer a classic and balanced silhouette and lean into the refined, timeless look that is dominating the catwalks for Autumn/Winter '25.
In terms of wash, we're straying from the lighter washes in exchange for saturated, darker finishes for a clean and polished look.
A perfect example of this type of jean is the G-Star straight leg jeans. They still offer a more relaxed and comfortable fit while providing a polished and clean look.
4. Vintage-Inspired Jackets
A strong trend that has been prevalent this year is vintage-inspired jackets. Their presence was noted on catwalks for Spring/Summer and now Autumn/Winter.
We're seeing styles from the 70's, 80's and 90's with specific styles including varsity jackets, barn jackets and even bomber jackets.
The bomber jacket is a great way to add a lightweight but water-repellent layer to your look while still keeping your outfit contemporary and refined.
Muted tones are a fan favourite because they provide a versatile and classic look.
The Gant Hampshire Jacket has been a huge hit this season, and we can see why. This padded jacket is not only smart but will keep you dry on those rainy days we know are coming.
5. Timeless Tailoring
Smart casual is huge this season, with a shift towards incorporating quality and versatility over micro-fleeting trends.
This trend emphasises a clean and refined, wearable look for various occasions.
Chinos are a great addition to your smart casual wardrobe as they can be easily dressed up and give an overall polished look.
We're seeing them reinvented with a tailored fit and straight leg for a more relaxed and contemporary style.
Tommy Hilfiger Chinos are a great choice, with this dark grey being a firm favourite with our customers. Instead of black, a grey tone is a great way to add a modern twist to your wardrobe.
6. Classic Chelsea's
Most men have owned a pair of Chelsea boots in their lives, and some of you will be excited to hear they're having a well-deserved resurgence this Autumn.
These versatile boots have been an on-the-go essential for years because they offer a fusion of both style and functionality.
They elevate looks by adding sophistication, and for this season, we're seeing new textures being added, including suede. Suede has made a major comeback for its vintage charm and modern versatility.
A great staple pair is the Chelsea Boots from Harrison. These are meticulously handcrafted and will truly never age.
7. Subtle Streetwear
The streetwear trend has been a mainstay in the fashion world over the last number of years, and we're still seeing aspects of it on the runways but in more subtle ways.
This is characterised by the move towards more elevated streetwear outfits, so in turn, we're seeing classic pieces with subtle elements of streetwear this Autumn.
This Classic Polo from Tommy Jeans has streetwear elements present through the added sporty detailing. Pair with chino's or dark-washed denim for that refined take on this trend.
8. Cosy Cardigans
A key knitwear trend we're seeing in menswear this season is cardigans. They offer both comfort and elegance with their modern interpretations, including collars and zips instead of buttons.
Remus Uomo's knitted cardigan jacket is the perfect layering piece to add to your wardrobe. Finished off in this khaki green, it offers a sleek and sharp look.
