Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a campaign held every October to raise awareness of early detection, treatment and support for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
Did you know?
In Ireland, approximately 3,400 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
1 in 7 women will develop the disease in their lifetime.
A crucial step in early detection of breast cancer is self-examination.
Why should you do a self-examination?
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, but it can affect anyone regardless of their gender.
Early detection and diagnosis can improve the chances of successful treatment.
How to perform a self-examination?
Choose a comfortable place with a mirror.
Look for any changes in your breasts—such as dimpling, puckering, skin changes, or nipple discharge.
Raise your arms and check again.
Using the pads of your fingers, gently feel your entire breast in circular motions from the outside in, noting any lumps or thickened areas.
Don’t forget to check your armpits for swollen lymph nodes. Repeat the process while lying down.
When Should You Seek Medical Advice?
You should seek medical advice if you see any changes during self-examination, such as:
-
New, persistent lump or masses in the breast or armpit.
-
Changes in breast shape or size.
-
Skin changes, such as dimpling or puckering.
-
Nipple changes, such as inversion or discharge.
-
Persistent breast pain that doesn’t go away.
Most breast changes are not cancerous, but any unusual changes should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to rule out any potential issues.
Regular Check Ups and Mammograms
As well as self-examination, regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential. They can provide professional breast exams and recommend mammograms based on your age and risk factors.
Mammograms are powerful tools for early breast cancer detection and can identify abnormalities that may not be felt during a self-exam.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of breast health and early detection.
