October is breast cancer awareness month and we at McElhinneys think its so important to spread awareness about it, not only this month but all year around.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting woman in Ireland, so knowing the signs and symptoms and how to check yourself can be live-saving.
Be Breast Aware
Knowing how your breasts usually look and feel is very important so you can recognise any changes.
It is important to check your breasts regularly from your mid-twenties onwards.
Changes To Look Out For
• Change in shape, size or feel of the breast
• A new lump, swelling or thickening of the skin or armpit
• Skin changes: redness, itching, dimpling or puckering
• Discharge from the nipple when not pregnant or breastfeeding
• Changes in the position of your nipple
How To Self-Examine
Step 1: Look in the mirror with your shoulders straight and hands on your hips for any changes in size or shape.
Step 2: Raise your hands above your head and note in changes in shape or size.
Step 3: Feel your breasts. Feel each breast, armpit and up to your collarbone for any changes. You can do this lying down or standing up in the shower.
Always contact your GP if you’re concerned. Breast changes happen for many reasons, not all of them are serious.
If you’re worried, always be sure to get checked by your doctor as soon as possible.
Think pink!
Until next time,
