Summertime means it's time to grab those mitts and get the tan on again girls! Whether you're going sleeveless, baring the pins or opting for a backless number, achieving a flawless tan is always on the top of our wishlist!
All we want is a streak-free, golden glow that will fade evenly and look fabulous - that's not too much to ask, is it? We've put together a simple five-step tanning routine to help you fake a summer glow without ever having to step outside!
1. Preparation is Key
Any tanning expert will give you the same advice - preparation will be made or break your tanning experience.
Just like you do your skincare routine to keep your face smooth and blemish-free so you'll have a smoother makeup application - the same goes for your body and your tanning products.
Be sure to exfoliate your skin before tanning so you have a smooth surface to work with, and moisturise after your showers - pay particular attention to your knees, elbows, wrists, ankles and heels as these areas can be drier which means tan can build up here. It goes without saying that a blank canvas is best, so if you have tan on, be sure to have it fully removed before applying any more!
2. Hair Removal Comes First
Be sure to shave or wax at least 24 hours before tanning. Hair removal too close to tanning can allow the tan to collect in the pores, leaving you looking dotty! Remove the hair and allow your skin to settle before tanning.
3. Choose Your Shade
Finding the right tanning product for you is just as important as a good routine, because if you have the routine down but the wrong shade it's never going to look right!
Most tanning brands have a number of colour options ranging from Medium to Ultra-Dark and allow you to choose the development time for a darker shade. If you're unsure of the shade, then less is probably more!
.
4. Apply Like A Pro
Whether you're using a mitt, a brush, or a combination of multiple tanning tools, then start small and build it up.
Apply your tan in large circular motions, starting with your body, arms and legs. Leave your hands, feet and face to last.
For your hands and feet, we recommend using a small amount of product on a brush that you can buff into each little crevice. For your face, we love a facial mist or serum, again you can control the amount of product and buff it in with a brush.
5. Maintenance Must-Haves
Once you have applied your tan, opt for lighter clothing to avoid lines and marks.
We highly recommend the Tanning Bag if you like to let your tan develop overnight.
Keep your skin hydrated with a non-oil based moisturiser (the oil will break down your tan quicker), and use non-oil based soaps for your showers while tanned up!
.
So there you have it, the fool-proof 5-step tanning routine that will give you a gorgeous glow all year round. You can shop the McElhinneys collection of tanning products in our Beauty Hall, or shop online for delivery direct to your door for your next tanning day.
Until next time,
