Is there ever an occasion that doesn’t call for afternoon tea? Whilst you can’t beat the treat of going out to tea at a top hotel or glamorous restaurant for the really momentous occasions, afternoon tea is also a wonderfully easy yet effective gathering to host in your own home too. So, the next time you are having friends over for a coffee and catch up, or hosting a family gathering, why not recreate the finest afternoon tea at home with some of our top tableware tips.
Traditional afternoon tea tableware can be patterned (often floral) or plain but the key with these are delicate features such as classically shaped teapots and ornate cake stands. More brands are releasing luxury tea-ware made from ornate materials, such as marble and agate, with gleaming metallic embellishments to really give your at-home afternoon tea the feel of a plush five star hotel. I would also recommend using gold cutlery, as it is trendy and will give your table that glamorous finishing look.
Afternoon tea requires lots of planning, so be sure to have your serving platters ready beforehand. Be sure to use cake stands to add height to your table arrangement, which also adds to the excitement as a centrepiece that is ornate and practical (to serve lots of tasty treats). Arrange your sandwiches and other treats on platters or serving plates around the cake stands, so your guests arrive to a table filled with food! Make sure each guest has a small plate (side or dessert plates work well) along with all important china teacups and cutlery, so they can serve themselves. For the finishing touch, add pastel/coloured tablecloths and linen napkins to add that final touch of colour to your setting.
